Why Older PSA-Authenticated Cards Sometimes Sell for Less

In the sports card market, authentication is everything. Collectors and investors alike look to PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) as one of the gold standards in grading. But here’s a question that often comes up:
Why do older PSA-authenticated cards sometimes sell for less than cards graded more recently—even when the grade is the same?
On the left is a 1965 Topps Mickey Mantle card graded PSA 6 with an OLD PSA label, and on the right is a 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle graded PSA 4 with a NEW PSA label:

The answer lies in how grading standards, slab design, and collector psychology have evolved over time.
1. Evolving Grading Standards
PSA has refined and tightened its grading scale over the years. A card that earned a PSA 7 in the early 2000s may not meet the same bar if resubmitted today. Because of this, some buyers view older slabs with caution, fearing that the grade might be slightly generous by today’s stricter standards.
This perception can lower demand—and price—for older-graded cards.
2. Slab Design & Security Features
Collectors care about the look and security of their slabs. PSA has rolled out newer holders with updated labels, tamper-proof technology, and QR code verification. These changes make modern slabs look more professional and instill greater buyer confidence.
In contrast, older slabs with bulky cases or outdated fonts can appear less secure, making them less attractive in the marketplace.
3. Market Preference for “New Cert” Cards
A growing number of collectors actively seek new certification numbers, believing they reflect today’s grading standards. Cards in older slabs are sometimes “cracked out” and resubmitted to PSA in hopes of a bump.
Because of this, older slabs can carry a stigma—buyers assume they might have been left unreviewed for a reason.
4. Buyer Confidence & Liquidity
On platforms like eBay and in major auctions, newer PSA slabs usually sell faster and closer to comps. Buyers feel more confident in the accuracy of recent grades, while older slabs may require a discount to move.
The difference often comes down to trust—and trust drives liquidity.
5. Visual Appeal Matters
Presentation plays a role, too. PSA’s newer labels feature cleaner fonts, barcodes, and QR codes, which modern collectors prefer. Old red flip labels or faded inserts don’t showcase the card as well, even if the grade is technically the same.
In the display-focused hobby world, aesthetics can impact sales.
The Bottom Line
While the cardboard itself hasn’t changed, perceptions of grading accuracy and security have. That’s why newer PSA-authenticated cards typically command higher prices than their older-slab counterparts.
For savvy collectors, however, this creates opportunity: buying discounted older slabs and resubmitting them for review can sometimes unlock extra value.
👉 Tip for Collectors: If you come across an older PSA slab at a discount, consider the potential upside of a regrade. It might be the hidden edge that turns a good buy into a great investment. If you want a free consultation or appraisal on your older PSA slabs feel free to reach out to us via our
