1919 World Series Chicago Black Sox Baseball Found in Time Capsule

Hidden in a Wall of the Chicago Tribune the Baseball is Part of World Series Record
  • September 17, 2022

A baseball used in the 1919 World Series known famously as The Black Sox Scandal was discovered in a time capsule found in the old Chicago Tribune building. This baseball was part of World Series record that still stands today. What is the value on this ball you ask? How about seven figures!

The 1919 World Series is most well-known as the Black Sox Scandal. The Chicago White Sox battled the Cincinnati Reds. The Sox players were angry at their owner, Charles Comiskey, feeling they were underpaid. Back in 1919, a player could not refuse a contract or they wouldn't be allowed to play for another Major League team; there was no player's union like you know of today. When it was time to play for a championship, several of the White Sox decided to throw the game for money paid by gamblers. Eventually the players were caught fixing games and banned from baseball for life. Chick Gandil, Eddie Cicotte, Happy Felsch, Fred McMullin, Charles Risberg, Buck Weaver, Lefty Williams, and Shoeless Joe Jackson were the "Eight Men Out."  Incredibly, a baseball from that very world series was JUST discovered!

A time capsule buried in the walls of the Tribune over 100 years ago, found in 2018, and opened here in 2022. The baseball from Game 5 of the 1919 World Series which was used to strike out five batters in a row (still a World Series record today) could be worth a million dollars! Thank you to WGN News for posting this video.

We offer many ways to evaluate your cards other than using our website, too.

  • Travel to us

If you can make the trip here like the son from my hometown did for this collection- we can make a deal at the office. We once met a father-son duo that drove eight hours from Virginia to meet us to sell a Michael Jordan rookie card stored in Tupperware since 1986 - great read here

  • Come to the convention

We keep a LIST of the card shows we'll be attending.  Come stop by the Just Collect table and chat.

  • Meet in-person

If you have a valuable collection and want us to come to you, we'll hop on the next plane out. We recently took a trip to California to purchase a collection that included three Jackie Robinson 1948 Leaf rookie cards that you can read about here.

  • Meet in New York City

We have another location in New York you can meet us at; read all the information here.

  • SHIP your collection
