It is known as "The Pack Heard Round the World". In 2018, our sister company, Vintage Breaks, had An "Eye Popping" Pull from 1955 Bowman at The National. The story made headlines because in that 1955 Bowman pack came a Mickey Mantle card that would eventually grade a PSA 9. Since that time, the Mickey Mantle card sold for $358,000! In the same pack, there was a Steve Gromek and that very card is now available for purchase on the Just Collect eBay page. 

The Steve Gromek card has a story of its own. It has been graded a PSA 8.5 and is only the second card to receive an 8.5 grade. There are no higher graded 1955 Bowman Steve Gromek cards. A right-handed pitcher with an outstanding fastball, Gromek had a 17-year career with the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers. His best season came in 1945 when he won 19 games and had a 2.55 ERA with the Indians, but he was mostly remembered for a photo taken with a teammate in the clubhouse. 

Steve Gromek and Larry Doby embraced each other in the Indians clubhouse after a win in the 1948 World Series that brought Cleveland one victory away from the championship. With huge smiles on both their faces, the moment was captured in a photograph and was printed in newspapers all over the country. It was a moment of peace and unity that still resonates today. 

He may not be "The Mick", but Gromek's relevance is just as important as Mantle's.
