1979-80 Topps Wayne Gretzky Rookie Tops One Million Dollars

One of the Two-Known PSA 10 Rookies Off the Market
  • May 10, 2021

One of the only two known PSA 10 graded 1979-80 Topps Wayne Gretzky rookie cards has been sold.  The sale price topped the seven-figure range on this iconic card!  Check out the new price tag for The Great One!

Our good friends over at Sports Collectors Daily reported that a PSA 10 1979-80 Topps rookie card of Wayne Gretzky was sold privately through PWCC for $1,050,00!

You may have forgotten that back in 1979, you were seeing the first NHL cards of Gretzky's team, the Edmonton Oilers. The team left the WHA and joined the NHL in Wayne's rookie season.  You can a little bit of history on one card; first NHL card of the Oilers and Gretzy's rookie.

Of the 264 cards in the set, not only do you have the Gretzky card, but you also get Gordie Howe's final issue, too!

Cards 244-261 were team cards. There is one overall "team" card logos of the three additional teams that came over from the WHA along with the Oilers (Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets).

The million-dollar Gretzky rookie was given a grade of 10 by PSA. If you're not familiar with card grading, PSA is one of the top graders in the industry and assigns cards a grade on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being Gem Mint - a flawless card.  Of all of the 1979-80 Topps Wayne Gretzky cards sent to PSA for grading (7,560 as the time of this blog), only TWO cards were given a Gem Mint 10 grade. You can view the PSA population report here.

Not only would we be interested in the second PSA 10 Wayne Gretzky card out here, we're buying his rookie cards in all conditions.

I've run into a wide range of people and collections over the last 25 years. Although Just Collect is known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage baseball cards, I am also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, too!

Every collection and every collector is different and I treat EVERY collection with the respect and attention that we show for our own collections. I understand that many have put their heart and souls into building their collections. So when you're ready to sell, I understand the feelings that you're going through and will work with you to help you reach a decision that is a WIN/WIN, because if you're not happy, I'm not happy.
