E92 Dockman & Sons Honus Wagner Batting SGC 55

The late Tony Gwynn often paid tribute to Honus Wagner, the man with whom he shared a record of eight National League batting titles won.  Wagner began his Major League career in 1897 and played 21 years in the bigs. Numerous firsts occurred during his reign as one of the finest shortstops of all time, and greatest of all players as well.  He witnessed the birth of the rival American League and the played in the very first World Series against the AL champion Boston Americans in 1903. More importantly to collectors, however, Wagner and forty of his baseball brethren has his image appear in the initial set of baseball cards issued with gum in 1909.  Confectioner John H. Dockman produced candies in the early 20th century, under the brands of Croft’s Candy, Nadja Caramels, Croft’s Cocoa and Dockman & Sons.  This initial set of baseball and bubble gum featured many stars of the day, who later were elected to the Hall of Fame.  These included Chief Bender, Frank Chance, Sam Crawford, Hugh Jennings, Nap Lajoie, Christy Mathewson, John McGraw, Joe Tinker and Cy Young.  Only two players, Larry Doyle and Wagner, were chosen to have more than one card issued in the set, one of each throwing and batting. Just Collect offers you a unique opportunity to acquire a high quality example of the E92 Dockman back Honus Wagner batting variation. SGC, the third-party professional grading company, rated this one a 55, VG/EX+, equivalent to 4.5 the highest grade appearing for this card on their population report to date.  Their population report shows that only 8 of the approximately 95 E92 Wagner’s have graded SGC 55 or higher.  PSA reports that only 8 cards of the E92 Wagner batting pose graded 4.5 or higher.

1909 E92 Dockman & Sons Honus Wagner Batting Pittsburg SGC 55

The cards measures 1-1/2 inches wide by 2-3/4” tall, a somewhat standard for the early 1900’s issues of cards.  Honus Wagner’s batting pose is portrayed on a bright red background that grabs your attention, and draws your view to his ready batting stance, gray Pirates cap and black-collared Pirates short-sleeved uniform.  This card exhibits no print defects; strong corners, incredibly clean white borders, and no signs of toning or album residue on its white back, which still displays bold letter type text.  Even the small print “Wagner, s.s., Pittsburg, Nat’l” remains vivid.   I’d like to hope I look so good after being around for 105 years!  A close visual review of the cards allows that it wouldn't be out of place at all in an Excellent or even excellent plus condition.  Just Collect is always looking for 1910 E92 Dockman & Sons Cards and vintage sports and non-sports cards from 1879 through 1979.  See our web site to learn more about selling your cards.
