A day at Just Collect isn't just processing cards for sale on eBay. While the numbers vary, there is a lot of the day when our staff is handling inquiries about collections. Whether they are emails or telephone calls, many people think that they have a collection that is worth "a lot" and that we would be very happy if we saw it. While there is no doubt that all of these collections have some value to the owners, it is not a certainty that they have much value to Just Collect or to anyone else.

Our specialists do their very best to vet these inquiries and to get as much preliminary information as possible. A common response is, "There's just so much, I can't explain, but it will be worth your while to come see it." While that may be true, in more cases than not, it isn't. But that is something that we've come to expect and we've developed a system to help gather as much information while making it as simple as possible for the owner. We cannot just jump on a plane and fly to Anytown, USA because an owner says that we have a collection that "will be worth the trip," but we will do the right collections. After we are able to vet these collections and are able to ascertain an approximate retail value, a trip may or may not be in order.  Regardless of whether we will be traveling or not, we can also evaluate and make an industry leading offer if the owner is willing to ship the collection to our Somerset, New Jersey office.

Across the Border, Too

Just Collect doesn't just get calls from Anytown, USA.  We also have quite a few collectors that contact us from Canada looking to get some information on their collection and we are very happy to speak with them, help them assess their collection and arrange for potential purchase is US dollars.  Given the exchange rate for our Canadian friends, that can amount to some additional returns for the seller.

We've been able to purchase quite a few other collections from Canada. Some in person and many via our very safe and efficient FedEx Shipping Program. We've purchased some great early 20th Century C56 Hockey Cards, a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and a near set of Canadian Post Cereal Baseball Cards.

We'll Be in the Neighborhood

The collection, as we were initially informed, consisted of mostly mid-grade 1950's and 1960's Topps baseball cards and included a few Mickey Mantle cards and some hockey cards, but it didn't seem, at first blush, to be enough to warrant a trip just for the collection. Luckily, we were attending the International Expo in Mississauga, just outside of Toronto, and the owner of the collection lived nearby, so we were able to arrange an appointment to meet up and view the collection in person while we were in Toronto. We're certainly very glad that we did meet up as there was a little more to the collection that we had initially understood. We were able to meet, review and make an offer that the seller was pleased to accept.

More Than We Expected

The collection featured several key rookie cards including 1958 Topps Roger Maris, Hall of Fame rookies represented in 1955 Topps by Sandy Koufax and Harmon Killebrew and 1962 by Gaylord Perry.  Additionally, there were other stars such as Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays and many others. But the real excitement was what was found in the hockey portion of the collection. Aside from the 1958 Bobby Hull rookie cards and the stars and rookies found in the other Topps and Parkhurst issues like Gordie Howe, Terrry Sawchuk, Red Kelly, Johnny Bucyk and an O-Pee-Chee Bobby Orr, there was the dirth of super fresh 1959 Topps featuring three second year Bobby Hulls, a whopping seven Gordie Howes and a small stack of commons and other stars.

Perhaps it is because many Canadians underestimate the value of hockey cards or maybe they don't think they are as popular in the States, but the collection had a nice run of lower to mid grade hockey cards from 1954 until the very early 1960's. Most of the collection was Topps (O-Pee-Chee didn't begin production of their own brand of hockey cards until the NHL expansion in 1967, even though they did produce cards for Topps for distribution in Canada for almost a decade prior) with a few Parkhurst cards mixed in.

While the Mickey Mantle cards and the Sandy Koufax rookie would normally be the highlight of any purchase of a collection from the 1950's and 1960's, Mickey was trumped by a 1958 Topps Bobby Hull rookie card and a stack of pack fresh 1959 Topps Hockey cards including multiples of several stars and more than a handful of Gordie Howe cards. Many of the cards in this 1959 Topps group were in Near Mint to Mint condition. The seller couldn't recall why this singular group was in such great condition, but not remembering didn't change the fact that these cards were fantastic.
