Complete 1968 Topps Baseball Card Set Sold for 1.4 Million Dollars

Written by Monte Jennings | Apr 27, 2023 12:19:42 AM

A nearly-perfect complete set of 1968 Topps baseball cards hit the auction block and the final price reached seven figures! With almost every card graded PSA 10, the sale price was $1,414,500.00.

Condition is a very important factor when it comes to the value of your cards. If you're not familiar with grading, professional grading companies such as PSA will assign a numerical grade on a scale from 1 to 10 based on the condition of your card. Example, if your card is in poor condition (having heavy wear, rounded corners, etc.), your card may receive a grade of 1. If your card is flawless (even under magnification!), your card may receive a grade of 10. The difference in value with even just one grade on the scale could be thousands of dollars! A gem mint, PSA 10 grade is hard to obtain on vintage cards thus increasing the value. In the early days of collecting, you may have played FLIP with your cards, placed cards in your BIKE SPOKES, or placed a rubber band around your stack which ultimately ruined the edges of your cards. This week, a very rare, high-grade complete set of 1968 Topps baseball cards was sold and nearly every card was graded PSA 10! The price? A cool 1.4 million dollars.

The 1968 Topps set is a beauty. Here is where you will find rookie cards of Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan and Johnnie Bench. The great Mickey Mantle was winding his career down, and Bib Gibson had an unthinkable 1.12 ERA as he took home both the MVP and Cy Young awards. You can see the cards from all four players above. The brown boarders may make for the most attractive design but the star power in the set is incredible. Imagine opening a wax pack of cards back when Hey Jude by The Beatles hit the radio (August 26th, 1968) and you chewed on that delicious stick of gum. A nickel well spent!

A collector amassed a full set of 1968 Topps cards, all 598, with each being nearly perfect. PSA graded each card and 572 were given a Gem Mint 10! How rare is a PSA 10 card from this set? According to the population report, there have been 13,624 Mickey Mantle cards from this set graded and only TEN total were Gem Mint. One of those flawless Mantle cards is in that complete set.

Mile High Card Company handled the sale and the price was $1,414,500.00! Check out this incredible set HERE.
