A collector reached out to us about a pair of Hall of Famer cards from the incredible 1909-11 T206 set. The two cards this gentleman was interested in selling were none other than Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie! Just Collect is always interested in purchasing T206 cards, especially Hall of Famers like these two players. One of our favorite purchases includes the rare Eddie Plank T206 card from The Fairy Godmother Find. This Dynamic Duo also has a cool backstory; we couldn't believe how much the cards originally cost.
$1.25 For a Ty Cobb T206
In the early 1980's, the collector purchased a table to buy and sell cards at a sports card show in the Pittsburgh, PA. area. To advertise about the cards he was interested in buying and selling for the local shows, the collector took ads in the classifieds section of the newspapers. Remember reading about local card shows in the classifieds? Or looking to buy a sweet 1985 Dodge Daytona as your first car...
A gentleman from Fairmont, WV. saw the ad and said he had 125 tobacco cards and had an offer of $1.00 per card. If this collector would offer $1.25 per card, the man from Fairmont would sell. The following day, the two met on the seller's Fairmont farm. The collection of 125 cards were from a cabinet in the barn, and in that stack was:

If you're wondering, the inflation from from even 1980 to today makes that $4.12 per card. We're not talking 1950 either - these treasures were acquired for less than a cup of coffee just 40 years ago. What a buy!
The Cobb is a Piedmont back, graded PSA 5.5 and the Lajoie has a Sweet Caporal back with a grade of PSA 4. The backs of the card contain advertisements for the tobacco products the cards were sold in. THE SALE
The collector sold most of his stack off to help pay college tuition for his daughter, but held on to just two cards - a Cobb and Lajoie, until now.
