How Much 2020 Olympic Medals Are Actually Worth

Gold Medal is Only Worth $820?
  • July 24, 2021

Winning an Olympic medal is priceless!  If I ever had one placed around my neck, I'd never take it off.  After seeing a tweet today about the real, monetary value of an Olympic medal, I couldn't believe what I read!  The medals are actually worth very little.

As I type, I'm watching the Women's 400 M Freestyle swimming event on NBC. I LOVE the Summer Olympics.  Imagine standing on the Olympic podium and having a medal placed around your neck as the anthem plays.  Totally did a double-take just now as I saw a Tweet showing the actual monetary value of an Olympic medal!

Our friend, Darren Rovell, posted a break down of what the current market value is of each precious medal.  A Gold Medal has just 6 grams of gold and 500 grams of sliver (bummer...I thought it was ALL gold!).  With the value of price of gold around $57 per gram and the gold being made mostly of silver (again...seriously?), a gold medal is only worth $753.36!

An athlete trains their entire life and earns a Bronze medal at the Olympics and when it comes time to pay taxes, the only claim $4.38.  Wow.

Can you believe how little the medals are actually worth?  I think we should give the medalists at least an fully gold medal if they win one!
