The 1960 Topps baseball set is loaded with stars, Hall of Famers, and a pair of legendary rookie cards. Today, we'll teach you about these incredible treasures in our series: The Set of the Week.

In 1960, Topps released a baseball card set with a total of 572 cards. Each card measures the standard 2.5" x 3.5". A horizontal design brings you two pictures of each player on most cards; a smaller, black and white image, and a larger image in color. Each card is multi-colored, catching your eyes!
The set was released in seven different series.
Topps still releases their cards in series today! You'll notice that Topps current Flagship products have Series 1, 2, and Update. This not only keeps you buying cards during the entire season rather than building a set in April, but you can pull cards of rookies called up mid-season in the later series; a win for you and Topps.
Cards could be purchased in 1-cent wax packs which had just a single card and a stick of gum (remember when packs of cards had gum?), 5-cent wax packs of six cards, and 10-cent cello packs of 12 cards.
Key cards in the 1960 set include:

The two big rookie cards are of baseball royalty. Yastrzemski, known as YAZ, is a first-ballot Hall of Famer (elected 1989). Yaz won 3 batting titles, 7 Gold Glove awards, and won the triple crown in 1967 by leading the league in average, home runs, and RBI. Yaz sits 9th all-time in MLB history with 3,419 hits. McCovey is also a first-ballot Hall of Famer. The slugger led the league in home runs three times, RBI twice, and still sits tied for 20th all time in MLB history with 521 home runs.
We could fill this page up with accolades from the other names in that key cards list! Mickey Mantle won 7 World Series and 3 MVP awards. Hank Aaron retired with 755 home runs, a record at the time. Willie Mays may have been the greatest all-around player; a 24-time All-Star, he won 12 Gold Gloves and two MVP awards. Roberto Clemente won an MVP, made 15 All-Star teams, 12 Gold Glove awards, and 4 batting titles. Ernie Banks was a two-time MVP and a 14-time All-Star.
Checking the grading at PSA, over 350,000 cards have been graded and just 319 were given a grade of PSA 10! Zero of the Mantle #350 have ever been graded a 10 and only 31 of the 12,000 + examples graded received a PSA 9. High-grade examples of these vintage 1960 Topps cards can be quite valuable. Using that Mantle as an example, the last sale of a PSA 9 was
Jun 27, 2023 for $54,000. That value is probably a bit higher today. As you step down in grades, the cards are more affordable; a PSA 5 Mantle is currently valued for around $1,000.
Our sister company,
