Vintage Parkhurst Hockey Cards Including PSA 8 Gordie Howe Purchased

Walk-Up Collection to Our Booth at the National!
  • December 08, 2024

A high-grade vintage Pankhurst Gordie was included in a walk-up collection to our booth at The National! 1960 and 1962 Parkhurst cards sporting legendary names were proudly purchased by Just Collect on the spot at the show.

We never know what treasures will be brought to our booth while at a show! From the unbelievably rare 1935 Goudey uncut sheet including Babe Ruth to Type 1 Original Dream Team photos of Michael Jordan, each show brings new surprises! While at the National Sports Collectors Convention, a collector brought vintage hockey cards from the early 1960's to our booth. High-grade Parkhurst cards and vintage hockey always draw our eyes!

1960 and 1962 PARKHURST

Parkhurst was a confectionary manufacturer based in Toronto, Canada. For a 13-year span, Parkhurst got into the trading card game and released 12 hockey sets from 1951-52 through 1963-64.

The 1960 Parkhurst set tallies 60 cards, each measuring 2-7/16" x 3-5/8". A solid color background sits behind either an action shot or a portrait of each player. Unlike standard cards today, the numbering is by team. For example, cards 1-19 are all Toronto Maple Leafs cards while cards 20-37 are all Detroit Red Wings cards. In the first photo below in our slide show, you can see the first page that each card is a Maple Leaf player. These cards are not out of order; the numbers are by team! Some of the bigger names from the 1960 set are right on the first page including Tim Horton and Frank Mahovlich. Horton won four Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977. Mahovlich, a 15-time All-Star, won four Stanley Cup championships and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.

1962 Parkhurst consists of just 55 cards and come in at a the same size as the 1960 set. Three NHL teams with 18 players per team and a checklist can be found, and there are different designs. You can see two of the designs in our photo below with card number one, Billy Harris, on the left, and card number 31, Gordie Howe on the right. Harris has an action pose with a colorful design behind him while Howe has a giant hockey puck for his background. Billy Harris was the very first player for the New York Islanders as the first draft pick in the 1972 NHL draft for the new expansion team. The Harris card is graded by PSA as an 8. Having a grade of 8 out of 10 on vintage cards is difficult to find, especially for card number one in a set. Kids often put their cards in a stack secured by a rubber band before anyone realized how valuable sports cards are. Of course, the card on top of the stack (card number 1) and the card on the bottom (the last card in a set) often has worn edges from that rubber band. Gordie Howe is known as Mr. Hockey! Perhaps the greatest all-around player, Howe retired with records for most goals, assists, won six Hart Trophies as the NHL's MVP, and led his Red Wings to four Stanley Cup championships. According to the population report, PSA has graded just 565 of these Gordie Howe cards and only 61 have ever received a grade higher than a PSA 8!

A pack of 1962 Parkhurst cards also came with a contest card to fill out for a chance at a free bike! We'd love to meet a winner of one of those bikes. Do you remember the contest cards in packs of cards? In the 1980's, Topps gave away a trip to Spring Training with their contest cads. In the 1990's, Topps had scratch-off cads to win Topps Gold cards. We may or may not have held those scratch cards up to the light to reveal the winning spots...

Here are photos of the of Parkhurst cards as well as our owner, Leighton, carefully reviewing the cards with the collector:

APPRAISAL AND PURCHASE

A collector saw our booth at the National Sports Collectors Convention and our sign indicating we are always buying. At Just Collect, we always offer a FREE appraisal. Leighton took the time to sit down and carefully review each card. Your local card shop is generally not well equipped to appraise or purchase vintage collections like this. The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate vintage collections. This is where we are happy to help you. Our owner, Leighton, and Vice President, John, will carefully review your collection with the care it deserves. After taking notes and providing the collector with a free estimate, Leighton hade a fair offer that was accepted. We then paid the collector on the spot, right at our booth! When you choose to sell your collection to Just Collect, we pay you how you want to be paid, be it cash, check, or wire transfer.

If you're not able to visit us at a card show or convention, we offer many ways to evaluate your collection. Just Collect has an office in Summit, NJ. that you're invited to. Recently, two collectors each brought their childhood collections into our offices that you can see in the Double Play Collection. We also are willing to travel to you for large collections. A trip to Seattle, WA. was made for the purchase of a HUGE vintage basketball collection including a complete set of 1948 Bowman basketball cards in the Silver Cloud Collection. You can also ship your cards with our two-day, fully insured FedEx account like this collection of FIVE Michael Jordan rookie cards was.
