The Stanley Cup Playoffs have come to an end with the Colorado Avalanche winning their first Stanley Cup in 21 years. While Colorado made headlines by defeating the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in six games, a game-worn Wayne Gretzky jersey has made headlines of its own. That is because his jersey has just set a record for most expensive hockey jersey sold.

Grey Flannel Auctions sold a game used Edmonton Oilers jersey of Wayne Gretzky for $1,452,000. The jersey was worn during game 4 of the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals where the Oilers defeated the Boston Bruins to conclude a sweep and win the championship. The Gretzky jersey has everything one could want in game used memorabilia. 

Showing its battle scars, the jersey has stick and puck marks from in-game action. Loose threads and multiple repairs to the sleeves can be seen, but the coolest part of this jersey are the champagne stains from when it was doused during the championship celebration. To add to the significance of the Wayne Gretzky jersey, it turned out it would be the final time he would wear an Edmonton Oilers Jersey. You can see the actual jersey HERE.

After winning his fourth Stanley Cup in five years, Gretzky would be traded to the Los Angeles Kings in a shocking deal for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, 3 first round draft picks, and 15 million dollars!
