Topps PRESENTATION sets from the 1960's spotted by Just Collect at a card convention! If you have never seen or heard about a presentation set, we are here to explain the differences between presentation sets and regular-issued sets. These sets are RARE!
Stopped dead in our tracks! While at The White Plains convention, our owner, Leighton, paused and turned on a dime. As he walked by the Heritage Auctions booth, he spotted Topps baseball presentation sets!
From 1959 to 1963, Topps produced complete sets each year in a special, unique way. Rather than having a Topps employee, dignitary, or even an athlete rip open wax pack after wax pack to complete a set, the company created a complete "presentation" set. Well before the complete sets you see in colorful boxes, filled with images, at your local Wal-Mart or Target, Topps didn't release complete sets in the 1950's and 1960's. For special individuals, Topps "presented" a complete set for those five years. For a complete presentation set, Topps placed cards into five different boxes containing around 114 to 120 cards per box. Each card in the presentation set is slightly smaller than a normal card from a wax pack and have a glossy front much like the Tiffany cards from the 1980's and 90's do.
Given the cards weren't distributed in packs, the condition of presentation cards are usually in much higher grade! Imagine opening a 1959 Topps wax pack and pulling out a Mickey Mantle card. That pack was probably tossed around a few times on the way to a store shelf, and then after you pulled The Mick, you didn't properly store it! More than likely, that card was was used for a game of flip or put in your bike spokes. If you were lucky, you kept that Mantle card and put in a shoebox! After about 65 years, That Mantle card probably earned a few dings and marks. However, a presentation set not so much! The presentation set cards were already securely placed inside of the box. No wrapper. No shoebox. As you know, the condition of a card is very important to the value! Using a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being Gem Mint perfect, even changing one grade on your card could alter the value by thousands of dollars!
Now you know why Leighton stopped in his tracks! In the video below, you can see the Presentation sets and hear Leighton explain a little more about these rare treasures:
