Another 1950’s card collection was delivered to our office this past week filled with vintage stars like Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron! A lovely lady and her husband reached out to me back in August and it was a smooth ride from beginning to end with a childhood collection. So much more came after that, though! In time for Christmas, Just Collect is proud to have purchased The Gift that Keeps on Giving collection.
If you have been reading our blogs, you will see previous collections that have been shipped out to us for a free appraisal like our Testing the Waters collection. Donna and Bill Brown have sold us multiple collections of vintage cards and rather than making the drive out to our Just Collect office here in New Jersey, the Browns use our easy mailing process. We offered the Browns our FedEx account with 2-day shipping, fully insured, all covered by us. What I learned about the newest collection of cards from the Browns was that their family members and childhood friends also kept their sports card collections! We're proud to have purchased The Gift that Keeps on Giving collection.
After we purchased the first collection from the Browns and they received their check from us through the mail, Bill mentioned he would spread the good word about Just Collect and to refer us to his friends and family. I’ve heard this many times before and I am very grateful, but I rarely hear back. Of course, at that time I didn’t know how deep their connections went! Fast forward to now, we have purchased multiple collections from this wonderful couple. From Bill's brother, cousin and to his childhood friend who grew up in Massachusetts - all have reached out to us for a . The collection we are highlighting today actually belonged to Donna's brother.
As a big Yankees fan growing up, Donna's brother was chasing his childhood hero, Mickey Mantle. This collection includes cards from 1956 Topps baseball and 1957 Topps baseball. He was also able to pull his hero, The Mick, from the 1956 Topps wax packs as a kid, as well as Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Clemente, Aaron, Mays, Koufax and so much more! The condition of the cards is very nice - I was surprised he wasn’t into flipping or putting these cards into bicycle spokes like many kids did back in the 1950's!
Look at these incredible 1956 Topps baseball cards here - from Willie Mays on the top left to Pee Wee Reese on the bottom right.
Great examples of the 1957 Topps baseball cards - just look at the bottom row with Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Roberto Clemente, and Ted Williams!
Donna's brother also had 1956 Topps football cards and was trying to complete the 1957 Topps football set based on the checklist card. Remember before the Internet when you had to keep track of all of your cards from the set by marking off each card on the checklists you pulled from wax packs?
Here in the bottom row you can see the checklist card that Donna's brother was using to keep track of his set:
After appraising the collection for the Browns, we made a strong offer and she relayed the information to her brother. The following day she got back to me and he was happy to accept it. Another check in the mail went out to this lovely couple plus their finder’s fee. You can read all about finder's fees on our next blog here here on
As the title states, the first collection the Browns sold to us is a gift that keeps on giving.
Your local card shop is never equipped to appraise or purchase vintage collections like the Brown's. The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate vintage collections. This is where I'm happy to help you. My name is John, vintage card specialist and acquisitions manager at Just Collect. If you have a collection you're interested in selling, I'd love to hear from you. Don't hesitate to reach out to John@JustCollect.com.
Are you interested in being able to own one of these amazing cards from the collection?
Our sister company, , offers spots in set breaks or hit randoms in their card breaks. Vintage Breaks offered the actual 1956 Topps and 1957 Topps baseball sets and each sold out very quickly this week! Lucky customers took home those very same cards you just read about!
You still have the chance to buy into the 1958 Topps baseball set break, though, with a beautiful Mickey Mantle and the Roger Maris rookie card here:
