PSA 10 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Rookie Card Making Rare Public Display

Will the Mantle Arrive in an Armored Car?
  • July 05, 2021

One of the three-known PSA 10 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie cards is making a very rare appearance in public this month!  The last time Mickey left the bank vault, he was delivered via armored car - will we see that again?  We'll tell you where the card will be on display and why it will most likely be heavily guarded.

The iconic 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card is one of the world's most valuable cards.  In fact, even in very rough condition, this card can command top dollar.  In January of this year, a '52 Topps Mantle graded PSA 9 was sold for 5.2 MILLION dollars!  If you're not familiar with card grading, PSA is a professional grader than evaluates every aspect of a card and provides a grade on a scale from 1 to 10.  PSA has assigned a grade of 9 to just six total 1952 Topps Mantles which is why the last sale price is so high.  If a card graded a 9 sold for over five million, imagine how much a PSA 10 card is worth!  If you've ever wanted to see a true treasure of a baseball card, one of the THREE-known PSA 10 Mantles will be on public display this month, a I'm sure it'll be a show!

WHY SO VALUABLE?

Aside from being a superstar's rookie card, the cards are simply in short supply because of a crazy story!

At card number 311, Mantle's rookie was placed in the second series of the Topps releases.  By the time the second series was released, kids forgot about baseball cards and focused their attention on the football cards that just came out.  Cases of 1952 Topps Series 2 simply sat in a warehouse until they were DUMPED IN THE OCEAN.

Forgetting the scarcity of the cards, now try to picture keeping a card free of any damage since 1952!  Nearly 70 years of touching, moving, or showing the card to your friends.  Maybe you played a game of flip for your Mick or even put one in your bike spokes.

For these reasons, a PSA 10 Mickey Mantle Topps rookie card could very well be worth over TEN MILLION DOLLARS!  With such a value placed on any of the PSA 10 copies, you can understand that Mick doesn't make very many public appearances but when he does, he rides in style.  The last time a copy went on display, it arrived by armored car.  After arriving to the display, the card was guarded by armed security the entire time! After all, we wouldn't want to see anything like the Italian Job take place!

HOW YOU CAN SEE THE CARD

One of the three PSA 10 cards, owned by Marshall Fogel, will be on display between July 10th - 18th at the Rally Hotel at McGregor Square near Coors Field for this year's MLB All-Star game.

The event is called The Hall of Legends and will also have a jersey worn by Joe DiMaggio in the 1951 World Series, bat and glove used by Hank Aaron, a program from Jackie Robinson's debut and more!

If you're in town for the All-Star game or want to make a special trip to see the pieces of history, all of the information is posted on the Rockies website (as they are hosting the game this year) HERE.

I've personally seen one of the three PSA 10 Mantles during a special viewing at the baseball Hall of Fame.  What a sight!  Here is the photo:

WE ARE ALWAYS BUYING

If you have a Mickey Mantle rookie card you'd like to sell, I'd be interested in buying! I am very familiar with buying 1952 Topps cards, including the Mickey Mantle rookie.  I just purchased a Mantle rookie last month that was hiding on a shelf with jars of pickles!  Read the awesome story about the "pickles" Mantle HERE.

Just Collect is always buying vintage sports and non-sports cards from 1879 to 1979 as well as select modern cards. We are also buying tickets and ticket stubs from sporting events, concerts, and other famous events such as Michael Jordan's NBA debut. Your collection doesn't have to be all vintage like this collection either!  I recently bought a graded card collection of more modern cards that was filled with rookie cards of Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, and even Hulk Hogan that you can see here.
