T206 Honus Wanger PSA 1.5 Sold for Price of 3.72 Million Dollars

Same Card Sold for 2.28 Million in May!
  • October 14, 2022

A T206 Honus Wagner graded graded PSA 1.5 was sold for 3.72 million dollars this week. How good has the market been for vintage and rare cards? The EXACT same card was sold for 2.28 million dollars in May.

As part of the T206 Tobacco set, the Honus Wagner is one of the most-sought cards in the hobby. The T206 baseball card set was distributed in various brands of tobacco between 1909 and 1911. For unknown reasons, Wagner chose not to have his card produced in the set (either to prevent kids from using tobaccos, or most likely that The American Tabaco Company and Wagner could not agree on compensation for using his likeness). The ATC stopped producing the Wagner card, leaving the hobby with very few cards documented; the estimate is around 50 known examples to exist. Since 1933, the Wagner card has been one of, if not the most expensive card to own.

This is the Wagner card that Goldin Auctions sold. You can see a crease down the front of the card and rounded corners in both photos but given the rarity and market desire, this card is still a treasure to own.

The vintage card market has been STRONG. A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle graded SGC 9.5 was sold for a record price of 12.6 million dollars in late August. That record belonged to a T206 Honus Wanger when one was sold for 7.25 million dollars in early August. This week a T206 Wanger graded PSA 1.5 (lesser condition than the record-priced card) was sold at Goldin Auctions for 3.72 million dollars. That exact same PSA 1.5 Wagner card - the SAME card - was sold for 2.28 million dollars in May.

Other vintage cards are setting records for prices, too. A 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie card graded PSA 9 sold for $720,000, a record amount of a Hammer rookie, this Summer. A more "modern" card from 1979, a PSA 10 Topps Wayne Gretzky rookie card, was sold for 1.2 million dollars.

At Just Collect, we have vintage card specialists that have discovered, procured, and purchased both a T206 Honus Wagner, 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie cards, 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie cards, and 1979 Topps as well as OPC Wayne Gretzky rookie cards. This Summer we proudly purchased a complete 1952 Topps baseball card set with the Mickey Mantle rookie card in The Black Box CollectionIf you're interested in selling your vintage cards we would love to speak with you.

  • Travel to us

If you can make the trip here like the son from my hometown did for this collection- we can make a deal at the office. We once met a father-son duo that drove eight hours from Virginia to meet us to sell a Michael Jordan rookie card stored in Tupperware since 1986 - great read here

  • Come to the convention

We keep a LIST of the card shows we'll be attending.  Come stop by the Just Collect table and chat.

  • Meet in-person

If you have a valuable collection and want us to come to you, we'll hop on the next plane out. We recently took a trip to California to purchase a collection that included three Jackie Robinson 1948 Leaf rookie cards that you can read about here.

  • Meet in New York City

We have another location in New York you can meet us at; read all the information here.
