The vintage card market continues to be red hot with a new price record falling for a rookie card of the legendary Hank Aaron. The Hammer's rookie card from 1954 Topps baseball had a sale for $720,000!
There is not enough room on this blog to list out each of the accolades that Hank Aaron accomplished; "Hammerin' Hank" simply did it all. One of the most incredible facts about Aaron's career is that if you take away every single one of his 755 home runs, he would still be a member of the 3,000 hit club; Aaron tallied 3,771 hits. The value on Hank Aaron's rookie card reflects his incomparable feats, and this week a new price record was set for his 1954 Topps baseball card #128.
1954 TOPPS HANK ARON ROOKIE CARD - $720,000
Example of a 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie card
PWCC reports a sale of a PSA 9 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie card for $720,000, beating the old record for an Aaron rookie price of $6450,000. The reason why this particular copy of Hammer's rookie card is so expensive is that PSA, a company that professionally grades your cards, graded the card a 9 out of 10. It is rare to find a card from 68 years ago in such fine condition. Aside from the almost seven decades of handling, kids often put their baseball cards in bike spokes to make their ride sound cool back then. A few Hank Aaron cards from your collection may have been used for a game of FLIP. So how rare is a PSA 9?
- PSA has graded 6,247 Aaron rookie cards.
- Only 2 cards graded PSA 10
- Only 25 cards graded PSA 9.
An iconic card and a low number of mint copies makes fur big-time sales like this $720,000 record.
The current price record for any sports card is 7.25 million dollars for a T206 Honus Wagner but that record is sure to be challenged by an SGC 9.5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card that is estimated to sell for 10 million dollars or more.
