The most expensive hockey card ever now has a price tag of 3.75 MILLLION dollars! A 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee PSA 10 rookie card of Wayne Gretzky is the latest card to top the seven-figure price.
Just five months ago, Heritage Auctions sold one of the two-known PSA 10 copies of the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie card for for what WAS are record price of 1.29 million dollars. The auction house just announced today the record was shattered with a new sale at 3.75 million dollars!
1979-80 O-PEE-CHEE HOCKEY CARDS
You may have forgotten that back in 1979, you were seeing the first NHL cards of Gretzky's team, the Edmonton Oilers. The team left the WHA and joined the NHL in Wayne's rookie season. You can a little bit of history on one card; first NHL card of the Oilers and Gretzky's rookie.
The O-Pee-Chee set has 396 cards to the set; more than the Topps counterpart which has only 264 cards in the set. Along with the Great One's rookie, you also get Gordie Howe's final issue, too!
The value of Gretzky's O-Pee-Chee rookie is more than the Topps card. Earlier this month, one of the two-known PSA 10 copies of the Topps Gretzky rookie card sold for just over one million dollars.
RARE GRADE
This OPC Gretzky rookie was given a grade of 10 by PSA. If you're not familiar with card grading, PSA is one of the top graders in the industry and assigns cards a grade on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being Gem Mint - a flawless card. Of all of the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky cards sent to PSA for grading (7,658 as the time of this blog), only TWO cards were given a Gem Mint 10 grade.
